The Dahon K3 and K3 Plus differ mainly in wheel size and gearing. The K3 has 14-inch wheels and 3 gears, weighs 7.9 kg without pedals and takes up to 75 kg; the K3 Plus has 16-inch wheels, 9 gears and disc brakes, weighs 9.8 kg and takes up to 100 kg (official site). Choose the K3 for short, flat trips and small storage spaces; choose the K3 Plus for longer rides and hills.

Key points

  • the official site recommends both bikes for riders 150 to 180 cm tall.
  • The K3 uses V-brakes and bolted axles; the K3 Plus has cable disc brakes and quick-release wheels.
  • Jollymap prices in October 2026: K3 HK$3,325, K3 Plus 305 second generation HK$4,180.

This English version summarises our 2021 Cantonese comparison video. The K3 Plus in the video is the first generation; the current second generation has an adjustable stem, noted below.

How do the K3 and K3 Plus specifications compare?

Chart comparing the Dahon K3 and K3 Plus: 14-inch vs 16-inch wheels, 3 vs 9 gears, V-brakes vs disc, 7.9 kg without pedals vs 9.8 kg, 75 kg vs 100 kg maximum load, HK$3,325 vs HK$4,180

In the video Jason said the K3 Plus weighs under 10 kg with pedals and the K3 is more than 1 kg lighter. The official site does not say whether its 9.8 kg K3 Plus figure includes pedals; we weighed a second-generation K3 Plus at 9.83 kg with pedals. Dahon lists the K3 folded at 68 × 31 × 65 cm but publishes no folded size for the K3 Plus 305, and neither bike comes with a kickstand.

What are the differences in handlebar, frame and wheels?

Image: still from Jollymap's YouTube video (2021): 14 × 1.35-inch tyre on the K3, 16 × 1.5-inch on the K3 Plus

The K3 Plus bar is wider, 57 cm against 53 cm. In the video both bikes had a fixed one-piece stem, 92 cm on the first-generation K3 Plus and 90 cm on the K3; the current second-generation K3 Plus stem adjusts from 86 to 96 cm. The K3 runs its cables outside the frame, neatly, with a steel wire linking front and rear for stiffness, while the K3 Plus routes them inside. Tyres are 14 × 1.35 inches on the K3 and 16 × 1.5 inches on the K3 Plus, and the wheelbase is 86 cm against 91 cm, which is why the K3 folds smaller. The K3 Plus wheels are laced in pairs; the K3 uses a traditional pattern with a similar spoke count.

Which has better brakes and gears?

The K3 has V-brakes and needs a spanner to remove its wheels; the K3 Plus has cable-operated disc brakes and quick releases front and rear. The K3's 3-speed trigger shifter runs a 9-17T cassette with a 53T chainring, so the small bike can still move quickly. The K3 Plus's bigger wheels make room for a 9-speed 11-28T cassette for flats and climbs, plus a hollow-axle 55T chainset that saves weight and makes upgrades easier. Both use 170 mm cranks.

How do they fold, and which folds smaller?

Before folding either bike, turn the handlebar down, set the saddle to the arrow mark and level the pedals with the left one forward. The K3 then folds in half onto a magnetic catch with the handlebar tucked between the wheels; Jason said it is small enough to go under a dining table. The K3 Plus folds slightly larger and its stem clips to the frame so it does not swing. Two still fit in a car boot, and folded bikes can be pushed along through an MTR station.

Which should I buy?

Jason's verdict: both are easy to ride, but the K3 Plus, with bigger wheels, a longer wheelbase and 9 gears, suits longer rides and hilly routes, while the K3 suits everyday riding for people who want the lightest, most compact bike. Riders close to 75 kg should also look at the K3 Plus's 100 kg limit. For how much speed bigger wheels really add, see our wheel size roll-out test of 8 bikes.

For 349 wheels from the factory there is the K3 Plus 349 flat-weld (about 10.44 kg, HK$4,580, grey). See the K3 Plus 305 and today's price, and our K3 Plus second generation and Mini 349 guide.
